The Challenge
Serving the Community Starts Online
Sea Breeze Fire District is the only 100% volunteer fire and EMS department in Irondequoit, NY — a tight-knit community on the shores of Lake Ontario just outside Rochester. Their volunteers show up around the clock to protect their neighbors. But when it came to their online presence, residents had no reliable place to turn for safety information, department news, or volunteer recruitment details.
The district’s previous web presence was outdated and difficult to navigate, making it hard for community members to find emergency contacts, learn about upcoming events, or understand how to join. For an organization built on trust and rapid response, a website that created confusion was a liability they couldn’t afford.
The challenge was to design and build a site that felt authoritative and approachable — one that could serve three very different audiences at once: residents seeking public safety information, prospective volunteers exploring how to get involved, and community members looking for department news and updates.
What We Did
Built for the Community, Run by the District
We worked closely with the Sea Breeze Fire District team to design and develop a website that reflects the pride and professionalism of their department — and actually works for the people who need it most. Our work included:
- Discovery & Content Strategy — We mapped out the three core audiences — community residents, prospective volunteers, and department members — and designed an information architecture that serves each group without creating clutter or confusion.
- Custom Web Design — We created a clean, confident design grounded in the visual identity of public safety — bold enough to communicate authority, warm enough to feel like a hometown department. Every design decision was made with the Irondequoit community in mind.
- Web Development — We built the site on a platform the district’s team can manage independently, making it easy to post announcements, update event listings, and keep safety resources current without needing outside help.
- Web Development — We built the site on WordPress, giving the Wise Woofs team a fully manageable platform to publish new articles, update existing content, and grow the library without developer support.
- Public Safety Information Architecture — We organized critical information — emergency contacts, district coverage area, fire safety resources — so residents can find what they need quickly, whether they’re in a hurry or just getting informed.
- Volunteer Recruitment Section — We built a dedicated recruitment area that speaks directly to prospective volunteers: what the role involves, how to apply, and why Sea Breeze is a department worth joining. Making it easy to say yes was the goal.
- Community New & Updates — We integrated a news and announcements section so the district can keep residents informed about events, alerts, department milestones, and community programs throughout the year.
The Outcome
A Hometown Department with a Website to Match
The new seabreezefire.org gives Sea Breeze Fire District a digital home that reflects the dedication of their volunteers and the character of the community they serve.
| 70% | Increase in site visits within the first 3 months of launch |
|---|---|
| 90% | Increase in volunteer recruitment inquiries via the website |
| 5 mins | Average reduction in time for residents to find critical safety info |
| 20+ | Community updates and announcements published since launch |
Residents now have a dependable, easy-to-navigate resource for public safety information. The department has a platform to actively recruit new volunteers. And the district’s team can keep everything up to date without relying on outside support — exactly the kind of independence a volunteer organization needs.
”Creaticn took the time to understand what our department actually needed — not just a website, but a tool for our community. The result is something our volunteers and our residents are genuinely proud of.
